Cheering Up Your Chickens

If you stop by the Flyte so Fancy shop chances are you've met Jan, our lady who mans the till. As this winter has gone on the fire in the shop has been burning longer and Jan has been wearing more and more layers to keep warm during this wet and wild Dorset weather. At the last count she was wearing seven layers and with her arms stuck outwards like a scarecrow, is beginning to find it difficult to pick things up.

Our Brahma's who live besides the shop equally spend all day waiting for the sun to move around and clear the barn, so that they can enjoy an hour or two basking in the waning light. Our five beautiful Brahma's came to live at FSF HQ when they were chicks and now, living in their Maggie's Six and Protection Pen by the shop, draw many an admiring glance and comment.

To help our Brahmas stay happy and healthy, we provide them with a few bits and bobs, to keep them looking their best.

Chicken Jungle Gym
A bored hen is an unhappy hen and so within their protection pen we have installed a Chicken Jungle Gym to keep them fit and entertained. With multiple perches at different levels, a ramp and ladder for climbing and a protective roof, the Jungle Gym is sturdy enough to stand up to years of chicken exercise. Keeping our Brahmas occupied, as well as fit enough to run the London Marathon, the Chicken Jungle Gym also comes with hanging points for feeders, treats and Boredom Busters.

Boredom Busters
When our Brahmas aren't being admired by visitors to the shop, they like to focus their attention on the Boredom Busters that we hang for them from the Jungle Gym. Circling around the treat to ensure it wont escape, they quickly set to work pecking away at it to their hearts content. Containing wheat, seeds, fruit and molasses they are great for giving our birds an energy boost during these winter months when there is little else to forage for. Equally they prevent problems like feather pecking which can occur from boredom.

Oreganico Poultry Tonic
I have been know in the past to enjoy a snifter of brandy before starting the long walk home from the local pub on a weekend, to help with the cold of course. Oreganico Poultry Tonic is a natural solution of oregano oils to boost your birds immune system. Its anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties help it combat diseases like: Avian Flu, Blackhead, Coccidiosis and more, as well as coughs and sneezes.

These three things, plus a dry Hardwood Woodchip surface for their run and plenty of Hempbed-E in their hen house,  help keep our Brahma chickens healthy and happy.
